R&D Pilot Plant Specialist

Job Description

The role is accountable for day-to-day operation of the Banbury R&D Pilot, managing resources/ planning, producing products for test markets and executing process/ product development trials.

KEY Responsibilities; 

  • The tasks and responsibilities in this role:
  • Apply technology, science or engineering understanding to enable the Pilot Plant assets to be used to deliver the capabilities required for NPD, productivity or test market projects.
  • Tasks can include: defining and leading pilot plant trials, collecting experimental data, writing reports, developing prototypes, completing chemical, physical and analytical assessments of product.
  • Responsible for safe process design and compliance with best engineering practice, good manufacturing practice and providing a safe place to work compliant with all statutory safety, environment and food safety regulations as well as company standards.
  • Responsible for the safety of their contractors during installation, maintenance works through adequate supervision at the appropriate level to support activities undertaken.
  • Ensures a thorough understanding of all aspects of process engineering is developed and drive external supplier relationships to ensure technical developments are kept up to date.
  • Ensures Pilot Plant Assets are available when needed and are capable of delivering.
  • Responsible for day-to-day Health & Safety management of an allocated area and accountable to the Pilot Plant Team Leader.
  • Suggests ways to improve the assets in the Pilot Plant or ways to develop them to be able to exploit new opportunities.
  • Key operator & trainer for allocated unit processes and is responsible for ensuring that the correct numbers of trained/skilled resources are in place to meet the business needs. 
  • Teach product developers & Specialist about the capabilities & limitations of production equipment.
  • Reporting & presentation of findings within R&D and project teams.
  • The hands-on role must be prepared to be on the front line.

 

Qualifications

  • MUST HAVE Degree Level Chemical Engineering and/ or relevant process experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Product Development or Process Experience
  • Knowledge of process & packaging equipment
  • Project management
  • PC literate in Microsoft applications
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail.

R&D is the major contributor to the development of innovative coffee and tea products and is constantly optimising the product portfolio. Focus of R&D is on building technology platforms, new products, portfolio renovations and productivity initiatives. R&D have a strong involvement in JDE business and are providing valuable input to enable business decisions to be made.

The Pilot Plant Specialist Role is part of the Pilot Plant, Facilities, Health & Safety Team within the department. The team are responsible for the management, operation and maintenance of the Banbury R&D Pilot Plant and wider department including offices and labs.

The Pilot Plant Team are also responsible for maintaining the pilot plant assets in an operational state, and modifying, adapting and improving existing processes and equipment whilst operating a safe system of work for all employees and external contractors.

This role reports into the Pilot Plant Team Leader and is to plan and execute Pilot Plant trials for the process and product teams as well as produce products for test markets. The role also involves the planning and delivery of new equipment installation, continuous process improvement for the Banbury Pilot Plant with accountability for the day-to-day management of the detailed process design, installation, and engineering project management (including cost and programme management) within Banbury R&D. Additionally compliance with safety, quality and environmental requirements during project development, project execution and commissioning must be ensured at all times.
